Helping Crime Victims
Crime victims often feel as lost in the criminal justice system as some defendants do. While nothing about being a victim of crime is going to be easy, prosecutor’s offices usually have support staff, often called Victim Coordinators, whose job is to assist crime victims get through this process. However, you should also know that the prosecutor and his staff do not represent you as a crime victim; instead, they represent “The State of New York”, and therefore obligated to represent the interests of the community in general, regardless of whether that best serves your interests. As a result, victims sometimes feel ignored, unprotected and even misrepresented in the proceeding.
There are laws intended to protect your rights as well as those of the defendant, and there are ways to insure the process goes more favorably for you. Greg Cholakis has frequently been called upon to represent the interests of crime victims. If you have been victimized by the criminal actions of others, and feel you need the assistance of an experienced attorney, please call our office to see how we might assist you.
